The School of Basic Medical Sciences of Xuzhou Medical University was established in 1962. After more than sixty years of development, the school has become one of the university's longest-established secondary colleges, with significant disciplinary advantages, a strong teaching staff, and excellent educational resources. The school is responsible for teaching basic medical and biological courses at all levels, including undergraduate, postgraduate, international student, and continuing education programs. It offers instruction across 28 majors in the fields of medicine, science, engineering, and management throughout the university.
The college currently has a first-level discipline authorized to confer doctoral degrees in Basic Medicine and a first-level discipline authorized to confer master's degrees in Biology. The discipline of Biology was approved to establish a postdoctoral research station in 2014. The discipline of Biology was selected for the first-phase construction project of dominant disciplines in Jiangsu Province, and Medical Biology was selected for the second-phase project, while Basic Medicine was selected for the third and fourth-phase projects. The dominant discipline system, featuring the integration and coordinated development with Biology as the leader and Basic Medicine as the focus has promoted the leapfrog development of the college.
The college has a teaching staff with a well-balnced structure in terms of disciplines, academic backgrounds, educational qualifications, and professional titles. They are dynamic, dedicated to their jobs, and passionate about their roles. Currently, there are more than 230 faculty members in the college, over 170 of whom are full-time teachers. The proportion of those with senior professional titles is 46%, those with intermediate professional titles account for 52%, and those with junior professional titles make up 2%. The proportion of teachers with a doctoral degree is 77%, those with a master's degree is 21%, and those with a bachelor's degree is 2%. Among the young teachers under 35 years old, 100% hold a master's degree or higher . Since its establishment, the college has had two ‘National Outstanding Teachers,’ two ‘Famous Teachers in Higher Education Institutions of Jiangsu Province,’ thirteen individuals who have received the ‘Special Allowance of the State Council,’ three ‘Outstanding Talents of the New Century from the Ministry of Education,’ one ‘National Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions,’ eight ‘Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Jiangsu Province,’ and eleven ‘Distinguished Professors of Jiangsu Province’
The college has four offices, eight teaching and research sections, one national experimental teaching demonstration center, and three provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers. Currently, the college offers three provincial first-class undergraduate courses, four online open courses for provincial undergraduate universities, and one course on the iCourses international platform. The faculty has compiled twenty-three textbooks as chief editors or associate chief editors, including six textbooks as chief editors for the "12th Five-Year Plan" national textbooks and provincial key textbooks of the Ministry of Education. Over the past five years, adhering to the principle of student-centeredness and aiming at cultivating students' abilities, the college has undertaken thirty-two education and teaching reform research projects at various levels. Among them, there are two provincial higher education teaching reform research projects (including one key project). The college has published fifty-one education and teaching research papers and won six provincial education and teaching achievement awards.
The college started cultivating master's degree candidates in 1985 and jointly cultivated doctoral degree candidates in 1996. In 2010, Biology and Basic Medicine became first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees. In 2013, Biology became a first-level discipline authorized to confer doctoral degrees. In 2014, the college independently cultivated doctoral degree candidates in Biology. In 2023, Basic Medicine became a first-level discipline authorized to confer doctoral degrees, and the college began to cultivate doctoral degree candidates in Basic Medicine. The college currently has three provincial-level key laboratories (Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Encephalopathy Bioinformation, Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Immunology and Metabolism, Jiangsu Provincial International Joint Research Laboratory of Immunology and Metabolism), three Xuzhou-level key laboratories (Key Laboratory of Physiological Function and Injury, Key Laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Pathology, Key Laboratory of Infection and Immunity), and one scientific research experimental center (Research Center for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). In the past five years, the college has undertaken more than 150 scientific research projects, among which 55 are projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (50% of them are general projects). It has published more than 300 papers indexed by SCI. The latest research achievements have been published in internationally authoritative journals such as Hepatology, Microbiome, Semin Cancer Biol, PNAS, and J Neurosci. The college has won one second-class National Natural Science Award and three second-class provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological achievement awards. It has obtained 20 authorized national invention and utility model patents. The college leverages its disciplinary and professional advantages and has established the Institute of Forensic Judicial Appraisal of Xuzhou Medical College in Jiangsu Province, as well as the Xuzhou Pathology Consultation Center, actively engaging in social service work. The college also actively promotes the transformation of scientific research achievements. The technology of producing high-quality protein from engineered flies jointly developed with Guizhou Medical University has matured. An ecological comprehensive utilization and ecological agriculture system for the resource-based treatment of organic waste such as corn straw, using engineered fly larvae as biological converters, has taken initial shape.
All the faculty and staff of the college closely focus on the goal of building the university into a high-level medical university with distinctive features and advanced domestic status. They continuously deepen education and teaching reform and consolidate teaching quality. By focusing on the development of their disciplines, they actively enhance the teaching staff and elevate the level of scientific research. They further strengthen their work style and enhance their social service efforts.
