On the afternoon of November 20, 2020, the Youth League Branch of Class 1, Biology Science Program (Grade 2020) invited Dr. Tang Chuanxi to deliver a themed lecture titled “Approaching Scientific Research” for all undergraduates of the School of Life Sciences. The lecture was presided over by Professor Yao Ruiqin, head teacher of the Grade 2020 Biology Science Program.
Combining his personal academic experience, Dr. Tang briefly illustrated the significance of undergraduates engaging in scientific research. Taking the abstract of his own research project as an example, he analyzed the connotation and internal relationships among research background, scientific questions, research content and research protocols. He also gave a detailed introduction to project design frameworks, literature review writing and document retrieval methods. Focusing on the topic of “how to search academic literature”, he introduced two major databases, PubMed and Western-language databases, along with their retrieval approaches and operational methods, and conducted on-site demonstrations and practical guidance. He particularly emphasized that undergraduates should master the method of obtaining first-hand information in research fields through literature reading, so as to cultivate analytical capabilities, integration abilities and critical thinking. In the interactive session, Dr. Tang provided detailed answers and pertinent suggestions to questions raised by students, and encouraged undergraduates to actively participate in scientific research during their undergraduate studies.
This lecture enabled students to master practical literature retrieval skills and gain a new understanding of the value of scientific innovation and the way to approach scientific research. All participants expressed their willingness to embark on academic research at an early date.
