On November 1, 2020, the 2nd Postgraduate Research and Academic Exchange Conference themed “Academic Experience Gains Value through Sharing” was successfully held in Classroom A101 of the Teaching Main Building. The event invited four outstanding students from the School of Life Sciences, including PhD candidate Tang Chuanxi and master’s students Gao Yuzhi, Wang Gui and Zhan Xiaoqiang. They delivered a practical and informative lecture for postgraduate and undergraduate students by sharing their scientific research experiences, experimental skills, and the application methods of data processing software.
At the beginning of the session, Tang Chuanxi introduced his personal research experience and research projects. He emphasized that researchers should be good at learning from predecessors and raising bold doubts in scientific research, so as to form a standardized working model of “experimentation, literature reading, theoretical review and summary”. He also stressed that no experimental details should be overlooked, as subtle details may potentially inspire new research directions. Subsequently, Gao Yuzhi gave a detailed explanation of the operational procedures and precautions for immunohistochemistry. Combined with her practical research experience, she instructed students on how to appropriately adjust experimental protocols according to actual experimental results. Afterwards, Wang Gui illustrated the usage of ggplot2, an essential plotting package in R language, and explained the differences between the data analysis software SPSS and the ggplot2 package in a simple and straightforward manner. Finally, Zhan Xiaoqiang, majoring in zoology, gave a vivid and interesting lecture on common types of laboratory mice, mouse feeding and management specifications, as well as frequently-used experimental techniques including intraperitoneal injection and intragastric administration in mouse experiments.
At the end of the conference, Dong Fuxing, representative of the Party Branch, delivered a concluding speech. He quoted the saying “No pain of learning, no gain of life” and encouraged students to maintain a positive and diligent attitude towards scientific research. He advocated active communication and mutual learning among students when confronting academic doubts, so as to jointly build a research atmosphere featuring rigorous academic pursuit.
