On the morning of April 20, the opening ceremony and themed knowledge contest of the 2024 Xuzhou Bird-Loving Week was successfully held at Xuzhou Zoo. This year’s theme was “Improve Conservation Systems, Safeguard Migratory Birds”, highlighting the significance of bird protection, especially migratory bird conservation.
The Bird-Loving Week campaign originated in 1981. The Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Terrestrial Wildlife Protection, approved by the State Council in 1992, legally designated April 20–26 as Jiangsu Province’s Bird-Loving Week. The campaign aims to popularize ornithological knowledge, wildlife protection laws and regulations, and launch bird conservation activities to the whole society. To date, Bird-Loving Week has become an important platform to spread ecological civilization and advance harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature.
Four teams from Jiangsu Normal University, Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou University of Technology and Xuzhou Society of Natural Resources took part in the knowledge contest, each consisting of three contestants. After fierce competition covering required questions, buzz-in questions and risk questions, the team of Sun Sihan, Yu Shaoyang and Sha Ziqi (representing Xuzhou Society of Natural Resources) won the second prize, while the team of Li Jiale, Zhu Chenyu and Deng Wenxin (from the School of Life Sciences, XZMU) claimed the third prize. The contest deepened participants’ and audience’s understanding of avian knowledge and conservation importance, aroused interest and a sense of responsibility for environmental protection, and raised public awareness of bird protection and ecological preservation.
At the event, Zhang Yuxin from the School of Life Sciences and Sun Haosong from the School of Medical Imaging performed a cross talk piece Fugue of Songbirds: Nature’s Musical Notes. With witty language, they shared popular science on wild birds and advocated ecological protection.
Upholding the theme Improve Conservation Systems, Safeguard Migratory Birds, young students of the School of Life Sciences actively joined bird-protection volunteer services, contributing to ecological civilization construction and jointly guarding the elves of the sky.
