New Roles, New Responsibilities – School of Life Sciences Holds Orientation Education for 2023 Postgraduate Freshmen

In the golden autumn of August, the School of Life Sciences welcomed 19 postgraduate freshmen, injecting new vitality into the school. To help freshmen adapt to postgraduate study and life, acquaint them with campus regulations, clarify academic goals, identify research directions and plan life rationally, the school hosted orientation education for the Class of 2023 postgraduates in Meeting Room 822 of the Main Building on the afternoon of August 26. Attendees included Dean Gao Can, Deputy General Party Branch Secretary Zheng Peng, Director of Genetics Teaching & Research Section Song Yuanjian, Director of Medical Laboratory Animal Science Chen Renjin, Deputy Director of Cell & Neurobiology Zhang Baole, Director of Student Affairs Xu Yue, Postgraduate Counselor Hong Xiaoran and all 2023 postgraduate freshmen. The event was presided over by Deputy Secretary Zheng Peng.

Dean Gao Can delivered the opening speech, extending warm congratulations and a sincere welcome to all new postgraduates. She elaborated on the school’s development history, disciplinary layout and faculty, urging students to uphold sound academic conduct, abide by research integrity and maintain mental health. She expected them to grow into lifelong sports practitioners, responsibility bearers, problem solvers and elegant individuals after three years of postgraduate training.

Next, the 19 freshmen introduced themselves one by one, sharing their excitement about entering XZMU and showcasing vibrant, positive mental states.

Deputy Secretary Zheng Peng then gave a detailed briefing on postgraduate daily management and student affairs. He stressed that postgraduate study focuses on capacity building and comprehensive quality improvement, requiring strict compliance with school rules and standardized conduct to become responsible, accountable postgraduates of the School of Life Sciences.

In the academic orientation session, Teachers Song Yuanjian, Chen Renjin and Zhang Baole separately introduced Genetics, Zoology, Cell & Neurobiology, covering disciplinary evolution, research focuses, faculty and recent achievements. They pointed out that postgraduate learning balances broad knowledge and specialized research, encouraging students to develop genuine passion for their majors and complete the transition from undergraduates to postgraduates as soon as possible.

Zhang Yang, a freshman majoring in Neurobiology, spoke on behalf of the cohort. He pledged to maintain rigorous academic attitudes, think independently, pursue innovation and delve deeper into his field within the big family of Life Sciences.

Finally, all 2023 postgraduate freshmen solemnly signed the Academic Integrity Commitment Letter.

Covering ideological education, research literacy training, professional instruction and mental health guidance, this orientation session aims to help new postgraduates firm up ideals, adapt to academic life, cultivate rigorous study styles and boost innovative capabilities, advancing the standardized management of postgraduate education in the school.
